Accommodating
Depression in the Classroom
Depression is a common condition among students, particularly
adolescents. Educators are frequently confronted with
situations in which students with depressive symptoms decline in
their academic functioning, fail, or cannot attend school
consistently.
However, teachers and
school personnel can make a lasting impact on depressed students
once they are well-versed in this condition, know how to guide
families toward treatment, and understand how to make classroom
accommodations and educational plans that help students
thrive. This training will give teachers this knowledge and
expertise to start helping students right away, and to feel more
empowered themselves as they manage a class.
This presentation lasts 1 hour, and is delivered on-site during the times that
teachers normally attend staff development training sessions. Schools have the option to
schedule follow-up discussion and problem-solving sessions to address specific issues in
their school, share ideas, and receive consultation to develop
educational plans for students.
Depending on the school, this presentation may satisfy special education training hour
requirements.
